Lynn Allen, The Dream Name

Many people have been curious about the name Lynn Allen Consulting.  In response to the many questions and because of the encouragement of my good friend, Darlene Davis, I decided to write a blog post about the origination of the name.

To provide just a little history, a few years ago, before the housing market went south, my late husband and I made a decision to move to Kansas City and sell our house.  He had taken a job which was a long daily commute for him from where we were living.

So we moved to Kansas City and about six months later, the housing market took a nosedive.  We came close to selling a couple of times, but the buyers could never make it work from their end.

Fast forwarding to 2 years later, the company offered my husband a job back closer to where we owned the home.  That seemed like a good move except that management jobs at my level, CFO, are not very plentiful in the area.

In October 2008, my husband and I had taken a vacation to a remote cabin in Colorado.  We spent the time planning and dreaming for the future.  How happy I am now that we took that time to dream together!  Colorado has always been one of our all-time favorite places.  We also had a compassion for ministers’ families who desperately needed time away from the pressures of the ministry, but lacked the necessary resources to make it happen.  That’s when our dream took shape.  Our plan began to build a minister’s retreat in Colorado.

The fundamental part of our plan was to start an online business, partly to move back to our home, and partly to fund the ministers’ retreat.  My husband had his talents and gifts which were different from mine.  But we decided to have one name to run all of the enterprises beneath.  But what name to use.  Finally, my husband came up with Lynn Allen which is my middle name and his middle name.

In December 2008, my husband died suddenly of a heart attack.  The dream, however, lives on.  A few months after he died, I formed my own company and it seemed fitting to name it Lynn Allen Consulting.  I still have plans to make that retreat happen.  I don’t have the details worked out yet, but that doesn’t really matter.  Right now I’m holding on to the dream, tightly, motivated by that and my passions to help others create success in their own business; and success in their personal lives by achieving their weight loss and fitness goals.

My encouragement to you is this: define your dreams and your passions.  Then work from them to build the life you have always wanted.   You will be much happier, and have a much better chance of changing the world.  Let me leave you with this quote from James Dean, Dream as if you’ll live forever, live as if you’ll die today.
